Big City Bug Hunt at the Hackney Herbal Garden

Saturday, August 1 - from 2 to 3pm

We are joining Capital Growth's Big City Bug Hunt, a London-wide citizen science campaign to help record biodiversity in food-growing spaces.

In this session, we'll explore the wildlife that calls our garden home, learn how to spot them and, importantly, how to record our observations using the iNaturalist app.

Whether you're completely new to wildlife recording or already enjoy using iNaturalist, everyone is welcome. No specialist knowledge is needed—just curiosity and, if possible, a smartphone with the iNaturalist app installed.

Background
Community gardens like ours provide essential habitat for birds, butterflies, beetles, bees and countless other species. They play a crucial role in supporting biodiversity but are often overlooked in conversations about nature recovery.

That’s why Capital Growth, in partnership with Greenspace Information for Greater London (GiGL) and iNaturalist, launched The Big City Bug Hunt- to record and celebrate wildlife in the city’s growing spaces.

By taking part, we're helping to build the evidence needed to demonstrate the value of community gardens, support nature recovery, unlock funding, and influence local policy and planning.
